Traveling from place to place often involves going to areas that we are unfamiliar with, whether that is across town or across the country. Using a GPS is an easy and effective way to make sure that we can find our way there. The advent of smartphones that have a built in GPS has made this easier than ever, but there are definite advantages and disadvantages to using a smartphone over a dedicated in-car GPS.

In general, the smartphone is more convenient to take with you. It can fit in your pocket and you can take it wherever you go, even when you get out of the car. This allows you to take it around the city with you and can come in quite handy if you are touring a city you have not been to before. Many dedicated GPS devices for the car lack this feature, though some in-car GPS devices do allow you to take them out of the car and use them as you walk around.

Using your smartphone means that you do not have to make an additional expenditure and purchase a GPS for your car. The smartphone, however, does not have the GPS support that a device made specifically for your car will have. Many manufacturers offer additional map packs for their devices and also provide updated construction information. This type of support is somewhat lacking for smartphones.

The convenience of the smartphone can be a drawback, though. Generally, the screen size of the phone is smaller, making those navigation instructions harder to see. Battery levels are also smaller on a smartphone and you run into the problem of having to answer calls on the same device that you are using to navigate to your destination.

Ultimately, because both devices can get the job done, the decision to use a smartphone or a dedicated GPS for your car will hinge on price and on how much you plan on using it.

With the expanding sizes of cities it is often a good idea to go out and experience some of nature. One concern people often express is that they can get turned around easily, but with a GPS you can avoid this problem. GPS devices also help you to enjoy your hiking experience more, whether you are a beginner or a professional. Garmin provides a broad range of models that are useful for the many different types of hiking users and hiking uses.

A budget friendly option, coming in around one hundred dollars, is the Garmin eTrex HC. It provides a wide array of features and can be used by the amateur and the professional. The sensitivity is very strong and gets great satellite signals even in dense tree cover. This is one of the main improvements over the basic eTrex model that Garmin had been producing. The eTrex HC is lightweight and waterproof, and it can store up to five hundred waypoints and save ten track logs. Five buttons are located on the side of the device so that it can be easily used in one hand.

The Garmin 60CSx is a higher-end model with more features. It is lightweight and comes with a 2.6 inch TFT display, which is easy to see in sunlight. It has a directional compass that works whether you are standing still or moving and a barometric altimeter to help you figure out directions to take. It also allows you to store up to twenty different tracks and can store 10,000 points total with a maximum of five hundred points per track. The Garmin 60CSx keeps track of your movement and it can tell you how fast you are going, your moving average, your maximum speed, and the amount of time you spent stopped.

Some companies have been creating great fishing products for many years and have successfully incorporated GPS technology into their fishfinders. A couple examples are Lowrance and Humminbird companies. They have been around for a while and offer a wide range of marine GPS devices.

Currently headquartered in Tulsa Oklahoma, Lowrance began in Joplin Missouri. It was founded by Carl Lowrance, an avid fisherman who designed a device to help fishermen locate fish. At the time, commercial sonar units were prohibitively expensive, and he wanted to create one that everyone could afford. He developed an affordable, compact, lightweight unit and Lowrance got its start. They still offer compact fishfinders, but they have branched out and provide all sorts of marine electronics and also offer general outdoor GPS devices. Their compact fishfinder line offers options from the 800 to 2400 watt range. They offer products that work with kayaks and canoes. They also offer more advanced fishfinders that are equipped with navigation equipment and have larger screens for use in larger boats.

Humminbird began in Eufala, Alabama in 1971 and produced electronic fishfinders, their first being their Humminbird Depth Sounders. Another product that they introduced in 1975 was a waterproof depth sounder. Through the years Humminbird has consistently made good products and was one of the pioneers in using LCD displays with the fishing equipment. Today they offer a wide range of fishing and water related products. They have depth sounders, down imaging products, and options for everything from the smallest to the largest boats. They also offer a compact series called the Fishin Buddy series that can be used in a variety of ways, even when you are sitting on a dock.

Determining where certain hot fishing spots are and where underwater hazards and reefs are is difficult to do. This information is critical to helping you increase your fishing potential and have a more satisfying outcome. Unfortunately, this type of knowledge often takes a while to develop and it requires you to fish a particular lake repeatedly. Marine GPS devices can help free up the task of making sure that you are avoiding underwater obstacles and help direct you towards better fishing grounds. They also allow you to navigate back to your favorite spots with precision and allow you to share those spots with your friends. There are many models of marine GPS devices on the market that range from basic to advanced and come with many features designed for fishing.

Using a marine GPS is much like using any other type of GPS, though the information provided is different. All models offer basic positional information. The GPS enables you to determine your position and relate it to other features around the lake. It also lets you navigate back to a particular spot with ease, which can be somewhat challenging on a large lake where there are not many landmarks on the shore to go by. The GPS gives your position so that you know how far from the shore or other features you are. You can place a point on the map to mark your favorite spot.

Advanced models offer features that enhance your view of the lake. They can show you the lake bottom, which further enhances your ability to avoid underwater obstacles and locate particular areas the fish might frequent. Some models have fish finding capabilities that locate where large schools of fish are, and some can even locate individual fish. That way you can concentrate less of finding the right spot and more time on catching the fish.

You can run into a lot of trouble on fishing trips if you are not careful. This is especially true when you are fishing on a lake that is unfamiliar to you. Underwater obstacles can snare your fishing lines and in extreme situations can cause serious damage to your boat. These obstacles are difficult to spot with the naked eye. Finding your way back to a particular spot can also be a challenge in some instances. Lake shorelines may be too far away to use as a good judge of location. A marine GPS can alleviate these problems and help streamline and enhance your fishing experience. The average individual probably does not want to spend a thousand dollars just to find fish and avoid obstacles, and that is where the budget friendly models find their best use.

The Garmin Fishfinder 140 is one of these budget friendly options. It sells for about one hundred dollars and is equipped with a full feature sonar and 4.7 inch grayscale display. In order to help you see the display in bright sunlight, which is often a problem on a lake and when there is little cloud cover, the display has backlighting. It works effectively in shallow and deep water due to its dual beam transducer. It also refreshes the screen quickly, so as to give the user up-to-date information.

Another good budget option is the Humminbird PiranhaMax 170. It sells for around one hundred dollars as well. It has a 4 inch, grayscale display and uses a dual beam transducer to provide accurate information in both shallow and deep water. It also comes with the Humminbird FishID+ system. This system allows a user to set certain parameters and the device to alert the user when those parameters are met. It comes with a depth alarm that alerts the user to any underwater obstacles.

A GPS device can be used for many things when you are out hiking and can enhance your hiking trip, whether it is only for an afternoon or for days at a time. One model that offers a lot of features is the Garmin Montana 650t. The Garmin Montana 650t is a high-end GPS device designed for hiking, which means that its many features have been engineered toward enhancing your hiking experience.

It is designed to offer the best positional information possible. It is equipped with a three axis compass that is capable of determining your direction, regardless of whether you are moving or standing still. It also features a barometric altimeter so that you can determine your altitude. To help combat signal loss in dense trees and deep canyons, the Garmin Montana 650t utilizes a highly sensitive, WAAS enable receiver. This makes it easier and quicker to pinpoint your location.

The Montana 650t has a five megapixel digital camera that geotags your photos as you take them. This allows you to put pictures to your favorite hiking locations. You can also use this feature to travel back to a location you took a picture, perhaps in a different season and compare the two pictures. It comes with 3.5 GB of storage for the photos.

Users can store waypoints to help find their way back along the path that they took, or they can share those waypoints wirelessly with friends. Rather than have to give hard to follow directions to a place you want your friends to find, you can simply give them the path.

It comes with a rechargeable lithium ion pack, but in order to make it more versatile, Garmin made it so that it will also support traditional AA batteries. A couple spare AA batteries are a great way to make sure you do not lose power.

With any technology, the longer the device has been around the more the device is improved and changed. This makes it difficult to stay up to date on current capabilities.
With any technology, the longer the device has been around the more the device is improved and changed. This makes it difficult to stay up to date on current capabilities. Manufacturers often find better ways of making the device and putting those extra features in smaller and smaller devices. There are always going to be basic pros and cons that should be considered when using any GPS device, however.

GPS devices are great at simplifying your life, especially when driving from place to place. The ease at which they can provide the user with location information and direction information has made them a go-to device for traveling. They are also quite capable for businesses that require deliveries. Many devices also offer the ability to locate nearby landmarks, so if you are touring a part of the country you have not seen before, you can easily locate areas of interest. They are not only for driving, however. You can use a GPS when you go hiking, biking, or boating. In each activity the GPS device can provide you with valuable information on where you are and on how to get where you are going.

GPS devices are handy tools to have in a variety of situations, however they are not failsafe. Some people may fear that by only using a GPS you will lose the ability to navigate around yourself.
It is important to remember that they may not work all of the time they may lose satellite signal or they may run out of batteries. Because of this it is important to remember to have some more traditional forms of directions with you in the car, like a map or written directions. This way you do not have to worry about being overly dependent upon your GPS.

Handheld GPS units tend to be smaller and more compact so that they are easier to carry around. This smaller form factor often means that manufacturers cannot put every useful feature that they would like into the handheld GPS. There has to be a tradeoff and so some features are left out while others are included. Looking for and spotting the features that you want is important.

Expandable memory is a key feature to look for in a handheld GPS for a couple of reasons. First, a handheld GPS can be used in a variety of situations from hiking to boating. Expandable memory slots allow you to swap memory cards, rather than have to save over data each time that you want to use the GPS differently. Second, due to their smaller size, handheld GPS devices can only hold so much so that memory space is often a premium feature. Some devices have a set amount of memory and you will have to delete information in order to save any more.

The compass is another feature to consider. While most handheld GPS devices come with a compass, there are two types of electronic compasses. One type can only determine your heading if you are moving. The other type can determine your heading regardless of whether you are moving or standing still. Most devices these days have the more capable version, but it is always best to double check to make sure what you are getting and that you are happy with it.

Other miscellaneous features include positional information such as elevation, ascent rate and descent rate. Trip odometers, moving time, average moving speed, and other information are sometimes tracked by the device. Looking for features such as these is important if you plan to use the handheld GPS when you go bicycling for example, because it allows you to keep track of your progress from week to week.

GPS stands for Global Positioning System. GPS allows individuals easy access to accurate, positional information. A GPS device can tell someone where they are with a high level of accuracy, what direction they are heading if they are moving, and where they have been. Each one of these features is useful by itself and provides important information. When these features are combined with other improvements the result is an ever increasing number of devices and methods for using those devices. These methods include hiking, traveling, fishing, and movement related exercises like bicycling and running.

Using a GPS while hiking provides a sense of security, even if it is not being used for hiking. The knowledge that you have a device capable of locating your position and providing directions towards the nearest help in an emergency is comforting. GPS devices can also be used to find new hiking routes or find your way back one that you have already taken.

A marine GPS can help provide directions around the lake while fishing. It can also store good fishing locations so that you can return to the area where the good fishing was last time that you were on the lake. This helps reduce the amount of time looking for that one spot that you found last time you were out fishing.

Traveling around town or between towns is also easier with a GPS. It can provide directions from one place to another. With the maps installed on the GPS, it is easier to find your way around traffic or construction. With a search function, a GPS will let you search for the nearest restaurant and then provide directions to it, simplifying your evening.

Some GPS devices are useful when out exercising. They provide you with the distance that you have covered, the speed that you covered that distance, and the amount of time that you spent covering that distance. All of this information can be very useful if you are out running or bicycling. You can track your progress over time and set goals to achieve for future exercising.

GPS devices have been on the market for a long time now. There are a variety of manufacturers and those manufacturers have a variety of different models and features to choose from. Add to this the fact that each device is designed to perform a multitude of different tasks and it becomes clear that finding the right GPS device means that you will have to weigh different features against each other and ask the right questions.

The first thing that anyone should look at when deciding to purchase a GPS is how well the device can find your location. The primary purpose of a GPS is to do this, so it is logical that you make sure the device that you are purchasing can do this effectively. GPS devices determine your position by communicating with satellites in orbit. Communication with the satellites can be impaired by tall buildings, trees, or if you are in deep canyons. These obstructions can make it difficult or impossible to get a signal. Some models are more sensitive than others and can get better signals in adverse conditions. Looking for the right model that can provide you with the most accurate position information for your needs is critical.

The processing speed of the device is also important, though it is generally more important for car use since travelling in a vehicle is faster than walking or bicycling and requires the turn by turn navigation to work more swiftly. A GPS does you little good if the processor in the device cannot keep up with you and tells you to turn after you have passed the right street.

The extra accessories and features on the device should also be looked into. Some differences will be because the devices are made by different manufacturers, but others will also be related to price. Finding the right price to performance ratio is important.
